The quality of the script is one of the most important elements of a successful film or television show. A strong script can elevate even mediocre acting and production values, while poor writing can drag down even the most polished productions.

As the industry has garnered exposure, neglect for the story, the foundation on which every great film is built has only increased. In addition to the issues of over-valuing cast influence, location and “oyinboishness”, we are now unduly focused on the picture.

How does one say this without sounding too critical or impatient with the industry?

I acknowledge that Nollywood is still a growing and evolving industry, and that improvements are being made all the time. A few Nollywood filmmakers are now paying some attention to the quality of their scripts albeit all misplaced on the “Africanity” or language than on compelling plots.

The success Streamer wars for content is giving to some films is a natural result. It shouldn’t in any way be misinterpreted as a reward from excellence.

I worry that the success may be misleading and distracting us from the real issue hindering Nollywood in cinemas all along- Story.
