This Week in Nollywood is a recapitulation of the significant events in the industry this week. While you were busy chasing the bag during the week, Nollywood was cooking! Here are the things you missed.
Showmax to relaunch with its 21-film slate
The African streaming platform, Showmax, unveils a slate of exclusive African films to mark its anticipated official relaunch. This rebranding follows the recent partnership between Multichoice, Showmax's parent company, and NBCUniversal and Sky’s subsidiary, Comcast.
The relaunch would include a new look, a new app, and a fresh product suite. The new content slate unveiled contains 21 original African films from Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.
Some of these are Cheta’m, a Nigerian epic drama series, Red, a South African serial killer thriller, Ghanaian dating show What Will People Say, and many more. The official date for Showmax relaunch is February 2024.
Adire comes on Netflix
Starring Kehinde Bankole, Femi Branch, Kelechi Udegbe, and Yvonne Jegede, Adire tells the story of a young fashion entrepreneur whose past of being a sex worker is catching up on her with consequences she has to grapple with.
The film, directed by Adeoluwa Owu, debuted in the box office on November 3, 2023, and ran for six weeks in cinemas across the country. After grossing over N31 million, the film comes on Netflix on January 13.
Tiwa Savage teases feature film debut with Water and Garri
Nigeria Artist, singer, and songwriter, Tiwa Savage makes her feature film debut in the Prime original, Water and Garri which is set to launch in over 240 countries and territories across the globe.
This film, directed by Meji Alabi, follows the story of Aisha (Tiwa Savage), an ambitious fashion designer who returns to her native home after 10 years of being away in the United States. She has to face the myriad of changes that have occurred in the years of being away and reconnect with her family and her former love. The film is set to premiere on Prime Video this year.
Ndani TV series Skinny Girl in Transit returns for season 7
After a 3-year hiatus, Skinny Girl in Transit comes back for a highly anticipated seventh season. This season is expected to pick up from the previous season finale with the arrival of a baby.
Actors Abimbola Craig, Ayoola Ayolola, Sharon Ooja, and Ngozi Nwosu are expected to reprise their roles in this upcoming season while new actors like Kunle Remi are promised to grace the screen.
Nigerians to shine in the 2024 Berlinale Film Festival
Gearing for the prestigious Berlinale talents are actor Tobi Bakare, film critic Ini-Abasi Effiong, and director Tunde Apalowo. Bakare and Effiong are granted this opportunity out of 3000 applicants from 131 countries.
Apalowo, following the success of his debut feature film which began in last year’s Berlinale, attends the film festival as the director of the upcoming film Londoner, which is the first film by a Nigerian to be selected for the Berlinale Co-production market.
The festival runs from February 17 - 21.
